Take That

Take That!

Take That are a five piece boyband. The group is made up of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams.

Gary Barlow is the main songwriter and the group have had 25 top 40 singles which include 11 number ones here in Britain. They have also had six number 1 albums!

The History!

In 1990 auditions were held in Manchester by Nigel Martin-Smith looking to create Britains answer to New Kids on the Block who were having phonomenal success in America.
Meanwhile Gary Barlow had hired a professional photographer called Michael Braham to take some head shots and it turned out that Michael was an old friend of Nigel Martin Smith's, and knew about his plans to form a boy band. Michael gave Nigel Martin-Smith's personal mobile number to Gary and as it turned out Nigel Martin Smith was impressed at Gary's songwriting abilities and said he would consider him for his group.
Howard Donald auditioned but was already 22 which could have been considered a little old for a boy band but his talent shone through and was given a place in the group. Howard then recommended a dancer by the name of Jason Orange who was a dancer that had appeared on the TV show The Hit Man and Her which was hosted by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan.
Mark and Robbie met on the audition day and were also given a place in the group.
Nigel Martin-Smith originally wanted to call the group Kick It but not a single member of the group liked this name and Take That was eventually chosen.
The newly formed Take That made their first TV appearance on The Hitman and Her in 1990 and performed songs called My Kind of Girl, Love and Waiting Around.
Their first single "Do What U Like" was a minor hit in Britain but attracted attention for it's cheeky video of the boys writhing around semi naked and covered in jelly. Songs called "Promises" and "Once You've Tasted Love" were also released but were also minor hits .
The first release that started to attract peoples attention was a cover of a 1975 hit by Tavares called It Only Takes a Minute which went to number 7 in the UK charts. They swiftly released I Found Heaven and A Million Love Songs which were both top 20 hits.
They then covered a Barry Manilow song called Could It Be Magic and indeed, it was, as this was their biggest hit so far hitting number 3 in the charts.

Never Forget

In 1991 they released their first album called Take That and Party which included all their singles to date.
In 1993 the boys released their next album called Everything Changes Mt of the songs on it were written by Gary Barlow and not only did the album hit the number one spot but so did four songs off of it when released as singles. Their first number one Pray was followed by Relight My Fire (featuring Lulu), Babe and the title track Everything Changes. They so released Love Ain't Here Anymore but this failed to reach number one and charted at number 3.
From 1993 onwards Take That became huge stars, not only scoring a string of hits but they featured on magazine covers, clothing, posters, books and if memory serves me right, I believe there were even dolls!
By this time were also starting to win awards and performing at events such as Top of the Pops, Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, MTV awards and the Brits.
In 1995 Take That released their 3rd album entitled Nobody Else, which reached number 1 not only in the UK but also across Europe. The first single from the album, Sure, gave them yet another number 1 in UK Charts.
For the second single from this album it was decided they would release "Back for Good. This reached number one in over 30 countries and gave them their biggest number 1 so far.
By mid 1995 however Robbie Williams had developed a sever drug addiction. It has been said that he began to miss rehearsals, felt he was not being given enough input into the band and began to argue with fellow band member s. Just before they were to start their world tour, the rest of the group confronted Robbie and told him they wanted to go on tour without him. Robbie then left the group to many teenage tears!
